Tanya Fletcher, Metal Leaf Figure Paintings

Metal Leaf Figure Paintings:

This current body of work consists of life sized figures rendered in oil w/ silver leaf backgrounds on Baltic birch. An even layer of oil color is applied & then selectively removed with a cloth. The revealed grain of the wood suggests skin and/or contours of the body endowing the forms with a 3-dimensional sculptural look. The artist’s theatrical use of size & composition imbues these paintings with emotional intensity & drama. This visceral aesthetic, however, still maintains an ambiguity, leaving the context up to the audience.
